I'm with you on the pumpkins v squashes debate. Small and yellowish squashes seem adequately halloweenish, just the right size for a tea-light, and with tasty interior. On our allotments there's an annual pumpkin competition, judged entirely by size and weight, which produces inedible monsters. I think one can do whatever one wants with vegetables as long as they get eaten at some point in the process. (I read recently about a workshop on making musical instruments out of vegetables. there are some lovely youtube clips showing examples, of carrot flutes, turnip ocarinas etc..I like the idea of making the instruments, performing a whole concerto, then putting all the instruments into a hot bowl of vegetable soup for the musicians to share in the post-concert celebration.)
On a similar musical note,, with reference to the somerset folk song you mention (the turnip hoeing song) I was reminded of a quotation by the learned musicologist/song collector, who published it in one of his books of folk songs. He wrote 'I have done some turnip hoeing in my time and it quite cured me of any desire to sing about it.' They certainly had a way with words, these old chaps,...
So, by the way, do you. Keep on blogging and thanks for the pleasure it gives your readers.
